Santa Claus will visit Virginia Beach nightly during the McDonald’s Holiday Lights show from 6:30-8:30 at Dough Boy’s 33rd Street w/ free candy canes and hot chocolate for all Santa’s kids!

Big news! The McDonald’s Holiday Lights Show at the Virginia Beach resort just got a lot more fun. The most special guest of all will be greeting kids after the show, Santa Claus! That’s right. Saint Nick himself will be granting kids’ Christmas wishes and giving away free hot chocolate and candy canes! The fun starts at Dough Boy’s California Pizza located at 33rd Street and Atlantic Avenue, where Santa will appear nightly, November 18th – December 24th from 6:30-8:30. Dough Boy’s will also offer great deals for everyone after the show. So, bring the whole family, stop in, and warm up!

Upon entry to the McDonald’s Holiday Lights, every family will also receive bargain coupons good only at Dough Boy’s. In addition to free hot chocolate and free candy canes for Santa’s kids, families can redeem these coupons for Family Meal Deal and Buy-One-Get-One-Free bargains.

There will also be a chance to give back to the community. Just bring along an unused toy or gift for a child, and Dough Boy’s will make sure it gets to a needy child before Christmas.

Kids are advised to be very good between now and then, as there is a coal shortage. To help out, Santa’s elves have been working extra hard in anticipation of more good kids than ever this year. As a result of elves working overtime, Santa’s workshop has a backlog of wonderful gifts. Kids, be very good so Santa can end the coal shortage and give his entire inventory of gifts away!

Stop by Dough Boy’s California Pizza at 33rd Street after you exit the Holiday Lights show. Bring the kids for a load of fun, and help Santa help a needy child’s Christmas wish be granted.

VIRGINIA BEACH — A pilot program to help homeless people seems to be paying off one coin at a time.

Feed the homeless meter

In August, Virginia Beach installed eight meters at the Oceanfront which collect money that goes towards programs to benefit the homeless in the city.

To date, the effort has collected about $800. Five of the meters are sponsored, at a rate of $1,000 per meter, raising an additional $5,000.

“I think you can be confident that when it goes in a meter, it’s going to the right place,” offers George Kotarides, owner of Dough Boy’s Pizza Restaurants, one of the meter sponsors.

“It’s not just giving them a meal. It’s getting them an identification card. It’s getting them transportation. It’s helping them learn how to find a job,” says Kotarides. “You want it to go somewhere where there may be sort of a template in place to kind of give them a road map to becoming, you know, productive citizens and recovering from whatever they are dealing with.”

“I love the idea,” Anna Johnson tells 13News.

Johnson unloaded some change into the meter at 17th Street and the Boardwalk late Monday. She and her family are visiting her son who lives here.

“We always have loose change. We take it out, put it on the counter, don’t know what to do with it. Great idea,” Johnson says.

“We’ve been here in the summer numerous times. I mean, you guys could make a killing on this. You really would, especially with kids that want to go there and turn the knob and see how far it goes like I just did,” she states. “It’s great. You know, they’ll go in and grab a soda or something, it’s like $1.26, and they’ll come and just put the rest of it in there.”

The city is supposed to evaluate the program at the 1-year mark, determining whether it should continue, be expanded, or end.
